Women’s Golf Posts Program-Record Score at Buccaneer Classic

Senior Madison Isaacson leads Catamounts to fourth-place team finish

Kiawah Island, S.C. – On the strength of the second-lowest team round score in program history, Western Carolina women's golf completed a historic showing at the 2021 Buccaneer Classic on Tuesday afternoon. The Catamounts capped the 54-hole tournament with a final-round score of 284 – one stroke off the school single-round record – in shattering the program's 54-hole record by 19 strokes, combining for an 8-over par team score of 872 to finish fourth in the 13-team field at the par-72, 6,100-yard Oak Point Golf Course.

WCU's 872 team score broke the previous school benchmark of 891 established in the fall of 2002 in Stockbridge, Ga., and later matched in the Southern Conference Championship by the 2015 Catamount squad. WCU's 284 final-round score was a stroke in arrears of the team's 283 fired in the fall of 2013 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the Waynesville Golf Resort.

Additionally, all six of WCU's golfers in the field posted or matched their career-low rounds during this week's three-round tournament, five of which came during Tuesday's final 18 holes.

Senior Madison Isaacson led the Catamounts by finishing in a 12th-place tie overall with a score of 216, her career-best 54-hole score by seven strokes. Entering the final round at 2-under par, Isaacson fired a 2-over round of 74 on Tuesday, adding two birdies to give her seven for the event. The Greensboro, N.C., native finished tied for second with 40 pars over the two-day tournament.

Isaacson's three-round score of 216 ranks tied for the third-best in program history and was just three strokes off the 54-hole school record.

Junior Victoria Ladd matched her career-low round with a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday with three birdies against a pair of bogeys to finish 18th with a score of 219, up six spots over the final round. It was her second-lowest, three-round score as a collegian. Ladd was followed by freshman Elizabeth Lohbauer who was WCU's biggest mover on Tuesday. The Venice, Fla., native gained 11 spots in the final standings into a tie for 19th overall after shooting a team-best, 2-under par round of 70. Lohbauer countered three bogeys with five birdies for her career-low round. She finished the tournament with a team-best eight birdies, tied for 16th in the field.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five were freshman Kaitlyn Wingnean in a two-way tie for 21st overall at 221 and redshirt freshman Kayleigh Baker up nine spots into 53rd overall with a score of 231. After posting consecutive rounds of 74 on Monday to represent her career-best, Wingnean shot 1-over 73 in Tuesday's final round for her career-low. Baker matched Lohbauer for the team's low round over the final 18 holes, shooting her career-low 2-under par 70, charting 14 pars, three birdies with just one bogey.

In her collegiate debut, sophomore Trinity Ahing finished 56th overall with a three-round score of 233, posting her best round on Tuesday at 75 that included four birdies.

Second-round leader No. 59 Coastal Carolina cruised to a 12-stroke win Georgia Southern, 839-to-851, as the Chanticleers posted a final round score of 277. Limestone (857) finished third ahead of the Catamounts (872) in fourth and Houston Baptist rounded out to the top five with a score of 878. Fellow Southern Conference schools Wofford (882) finished tied for sixth and The Citadel (972) in 12th.

Tiffany Arafi of Coastal Carolina claimed individual medalist honors by four strokes over runner-up Sarunchana Rattanasin of Georgia Southern, 201-to-205. Coastal Carolina's Caitlin Evans Brand completed the podium with a third-place finish at 7-under par 209.

Western Carolina returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 25-26 at the Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Live scoring of the event will be available online through GolfStat.
